Talking point: Can a 16-17 year old character played by an older actress be shown naked?
Earlier I repeated something I've mentioned before, that Kaya Scodelario won't be naked in Love Life because her character is under age. I thought it was for legal reasons but I realized while watching The Fades tonight where 17 year old Paul, played by 24 year old Iain De Caestecker, shows his arse, it can't be.
The indecency laws were changed in 2003 and don't allow nude images of people who are younger than 18. I've seen discussions which say this is for characters as well as actors but this has to be wrong. At the end of Shameless series 6, Debbie Gallagher had a sex scene. Rebecca Ryan was 17 when they filmed it, the character was 16. Even though the actress was older than the character, they were allowed to show the character topless but had to use a body double because Ryan was under 18. British TV has no problem with showing the arses of male characters who are under 18. I've mentioned The Fades and Skins does the same, the characters are under 18 but the actors are older and they've no problem showing their arses.

Something also in the slightly more distant future is a series currently being filmed called Labyrinth (based on the book of the same name by Kate Mosse). One of the stars listed is the gorgeous Katie McGrath from BBC1's Merlin; she's listed as playing Oriane who has a full-frontal nude scene near the beginning of the book. The reason I think this is important is because the scene isn't gratuitous and has significance to the plot, the character uses her sexuality to mock, manipulate and tease her husband who is a rather weak man. In the tv series it could be portrayed as just implied nudity, but that would dull the effect of the scene and how bold her character is, it also could be removed altogether but it shouldn't be as it is important to the plot in establishing her character. Katie herself has said that the actress she most admires is Kate Winslet, so she can't think that nudity is a bad thing for an actress to do, and also said that given the chance she would play any character offered to her in Game of Thrones, so must at least be open to the prospect.
Other characters with nudity mentioned in the book are Alais, who is to be played by Jessica Brown Findlay; Marie Cecile, who is to be played by Italian actress Claudia Gerini and another unnamed character, though these are perhaps more gratuitous and potentially could be avoided if necessary. My hope is that this will be a series where the approach to nudity will be like that of Camelot or The Tudors. That said, it won't be airing until next year and it's possible that nothing will come of it all, so it may be the case that you will not want to mention it in your blog yet, but it could be something to keep an eye on over the next few of months.

Two new London Film Festival prospects
Two new prospects receiving their debuts at the London Film Festival. Christine Bottomely is confirmed as topless in Strawberry Fields which also stars Anna Madeley. From the synopsis, they should both have sex scenes.

Possible Scarlett Patterson topless photos in DCI Banks, new Shameless cast announced
The Sexualised Nudity listed by the BBFC for episode 5 of DCI Banks was a website showing a few topless photos of Scarlett Patterson (who is sometimes billed as Scarlett Rose Patterson and is best known for Beaver Falls). I'm not sure the photos were real, they looked like they could have been photoshop fakes.
The last episode of this series of Shameless is on E4 next week but they've issued the press release for the next series already. On her credits is a 6-minute UK short called "Restless Love" (2009) ...
... which has a promising plot "Charli and John have spent five unforgettable years together, but the time has come for Charli to move on. In order to do so, she is contemplating to leave John. As a final verification she chooses to survey their intimate relationship to see if there still is a glimpse of hope or purpose for her to stay. The couple perform an almost dance like love exploration, when Charli suddenly brings it to a halt."
And in the Trivia Section are the following two interesting snippets:-
1) The director Karolina Berkell-Kirk, drew her main inspiration for the film from late British photographer Bill Brandt's work and scenes out of "À bout de souffle" and "Don't Look Now". But unlike the mostly improvised sex scene in "Don't Look Now", Karolina Berkell-Kirk scripted every single movement.
2) The love scene in the film was intended to be shot totally nude, but this decision quickly changed after the first day of rehearsals.
It's not possible to work out from item 2 if that means she remained topless or not. But if not then the references to "Don't Look Now" in item 1 wouldn't be all that relevant. There are no keywords.
It was apparently released on 16 June 2009. Maybe that was at a festival?

Love/Hate sex, female nudity to come in The Fades
The BBFC have cleared the second series of Irish drama Love/Hate. There was nothing interesting in the first series but they've listed sex in series 2. Ruth Negga and Ruth Bradley are the female leads. Series 1 was shown in Scotland as well as Ireland. It doesn't seem to be on the schedules yet.
The trailer at the end of episode 4 of The Fades showed a topless woman, I couldn't tell who from the trailer but I don't think it was any of the main regulars, it's most likely to be Jenn Murray.
Last week's Fresh Meat nudity was a one-off, Gemma Chan, Charlotte Ritchie and Kimberley Nixon all stayed gratuitously covered in episode 4.

Sensation nude clips online, Rose Leslie cast in Game Of Thrones
Clips are up in the usual places from an Irish film called Sensation. There's nudity from several actresses including two Brits, Kelly Campbell shows her arse and Tracy Green her boobs.

Talking Point: Is it really Joni Kamen topless in Killing Bono

Has there been any chatter about the ID of Joni Kamen in "Killing Bono"
being wrong because despite everywhere identifying that scene as being her I'm not convinced.
If you have access to the film then I believe Joni Kamen is the girl that
Robert Sheehan (as Ivan) is talking to at the party just before the sex
scene - Online pictures of Joni Kamen show she has quite a distinctive face especially her lips so it seems very likely this party girl is her since it looks very like her - then Ivan lunges at her to steal a kiss - and then the sex scene starts. That editing might inadvertently make it seem as if it carries straight on with Ivan and the girl in a bedroom. However the guy in the sex scene is Ben Barnes and not Robert Sheehan. And the sex scene girl was the one in the red dress who was dancing with Ben Barnes in the previous party scene. So the continuity doesn't follow that it even should be Joni Kamen.
Perhaps whoever ID'd the scene wasn't familiar enough with Ben Barnes and Robert Sheehan to tell them apart or was fooled by the inadvertently misleading editing? I suspect someone has made an incorrect ID and then everyone has just followed this as if 100% correct.
Joni Kamen has a very small non-speaking role for someone credited and her given character name is not mentioned. So admittedly it is a tough one and it required a bit of detective work to unravel. But I like to confirm identifications for myself before I put them on my site and I'd sooner not mention something at all than perpetuate an error.
The sex scene girl actually looks more like Lisa McAllister who is also credited with a name but does not make any obvious appearance in the film.
So I think this girl in the sex scene is either Lisa McAllister or is someone uncredited. Just like the girls in the strip bar aren't credited either even though one of them has a line of dialogue.
A few uncredited possibilities found on Casting Call are:- Emma Reid as "Party Girl" or April McGrory as "Hot Teenage Girl" - but despite having pictures of them I can't say for sure.
The end credits are unhelpfully in Alphabetical Order effectively merging the main stars in with bit-parts - not order of appearance or order of importance, either of which would be more useful.
I haven't seen the DVD release itself - maybe that has deleted scenes which give Joni Kamen and/or Lisa McAllister bigger roles to justify them having a character name for non-speaking bit-parts.

It stars Anna Tolputt, Marysia Kay and Gabrielle Douglas as three English sisters who are living eternal lives under a curse which means they have to kill any unwary male travellers that come their way. Marysia Kay and newcomer Gabrielle Douglas are both topless in one scene on a bed toying with one of the victims, and Marysia Kay has another topless scene on her own.
The version I've seen was a foreign TV transmission, in English but with foreign language subtitles, so maybe it hasn't had an official UK DVD release yet.

Mixed outcomes in tonight's TV. Episode 3 of The Fades surprised no-one by covering up Sophie Wu in two scenes that could have shown nudity.
Fresh Meat showed willing to give us female nudity after all with a topless scene, from India Wadsworth who was also topless in the first episode of Lip Service. Charlotte Ritchie's sex scene happened off screen. Chances are it'll be yet another Channel 4 series that does nudity but not from the regulars but that leaves potential for Gemma Chan in next week's episode.

If you can receive S4C (Welsh Channel 4), a new drama called Zanzibar starts on Thursday. The cast are mostly newcomers and include Catrin-Mai Huw playing nymphomaniac Kate, Ellen Ceri Lloyd (her Casting Call Pro page says she won't do nudity), Elin Phillips and Hanna Jarman. Welsh language S4C apparently has English subtitles but they may get in the way of any nudity.

Welsh language S4C apparently has English subtitles but they may get in the way of any nudity.
The BBFC clearance for the first four episodes of Fresh Meat lists strong sex. I wouldn't say that the sex scenes in episodes 1 or 2 were strong so the next ones may be better. I still wouldn't bet on nudity.

Recent film and TV BBFC clearances
Three upcoming films that the BBFC have cleared as including sex. Broken Lines had its cinema opening yesterday, Olivia Williams stars. Next Friday, 7 Lives opens in the cinema and is then out on DVD 3 days later. It stars the often naked Kate Ashfield.
A lesbian relationship drama called Break My Fall is out on DVD next week. Kat Redstone and Sophie Anderson are the leads, the BBFC lists sex, nothing is on show in the trailer but it includes has a clip where both leads are topless.
The BBFC clearance for episode 3 (next week's episode) of The Fades says it has sex in it. That'll be the Sophie Wu scene mentioned recently. Episode 2 cut away from a sex scene and took great pains to describe Lily Loveless's character as semi naked in a dream sequence while showing her in a bra and knickers. I don't think there's much chance of nudity from it.
